Pisgah National Forest is the home to Sliding Rock, a natural waterslide. This chlorine-free fun place is located in Transylvania (yes you read that right!) county on US 276 near Asheville. Wow…a 60 foot, flat sloping boulder is fueled by 11,000 gallons of water pumped down the rock each minute! This amazing ride, provided by Mother Nature, was named Holiday Magazine’s top US Whitewater Destination! It is fast and furious but definitely enjoyed by both young and old.
Asheville provides great rafting opportunities such as those found on the French Broad River, the Nantahala River, and the Nolichucky River. The French Broad is ideal for calm family water floats and canoeing with its long peaceful stretches.
The Nantahala provides a great place for beginners to practice their skills but also provides options for the more experienced. The Nantahala flows through the beautiful Nantahala Gorge where the current is provided by the dam which also controls the water releases to be regular and predictable.
For the more adventurous, the fast moving Nolichucky River would be your ideal place. Hold on tight or on second thought you might have to paddle your heart out riding the waters of the Nolichucky. Many a visitor has found themselves outside their boat while navigating this river. One of the steepest and most breathtaking gorges in North Carolina. You will find yourself maneuvering around rocks and boulders to get through its many rapids and pools. This is not an adventure for the faint of heart!
If you enjoy the water and don’t mind getting wet there is surely an adventure to be found in the many Asheville activities that all have to do with water. Remember to bring your swimsuit and a towel–a necessity for wet and wild adventures! Summer is here and nothing is as refreshing as a little mountain air and a cool dip in one of Mother Nature’s swimming holes.
